SELF-CARE AUGUST 2015 COMPASSION [MUSIC PLAYS] Compassion is one of the four services standards. Compassion is showing empathy, respect, and care for others. It’s also important to your self-care that you’re offering the same level of kindness and protection to yourself. Compassion doesn’t require total self-sacrifice. If you don’t treat yourself well and meet your own needs, what you’re able to give doesn’t grow. You have to nurture yourself to have anything to offer. When you’re in the process of denying yourself rest, nourishment, or relief, ask, “Would I do this to someone else?” If all people deserve health, safety, love, and respect, doesn’t that include you? Contrary to the adage, we shouldn’t “give until it hurts.” We should give until it works. You can take excellent care of the people that need you, including yourself. Be compassionate to all. And take time to take care.
