INSIDE OKDHS SELF-CARE, NOVEMBER 2013 (MUSIC PLAYS) Think of your life as a garden. What keeps it growing is you watering it. Your energy is like the garden hose. Without it the garden would wither. Unfortunately, your energy flow can be disrupted by stress. The stress response is like capping the hose. As the pressure builds, stress chemicals like cortisol are released in your body, boosting your energy to get you through the tough patch. When this energy isn't completely expended or when stressful events happen in rapid succession, the energy - along with the stress chemicals - are stored in the body. This can cause hormonal disruption, weight gain, sleep loss, blood pressure spikes and a host of other physical ailments. It's like watering your garden with poison. You can't prevent all stressful situations, but you can make a quick choice to spend the stressful energy and reduce harm. A five minute power walk is a fast release. Try a little desk dancing. Plug into your favorite music and let it move you. Movement of any kind is an easy escape that burns off the bad stuff. Try giving yourself the giggles. Talk to a hilarious friend or watch something funny. Laughter releases a burst of pent up pressure and resets your mood. Keep your garden growing by keeping your energy moving. And Take Time to Take Care. (MUSIC PLAYS)
