SELF-CARE - FEBRUARY, 2014: TELL IT LIKE IT IS (MUSIC PLAYS) When someone asks you how you are doing is your immediate answer, "just fine" without even thinking about it? It's a form of politeness to keep your problems to yourself in a light exchange, but do you ever allow yourself to tell it like it is? The relief you feel when you give an issue words can be transformative. The first step is to choose someone you trust to speak with. Pick someone whose viewpoint you appreciate or who handles their own challenges honestly. Next, pick a good time. Let your friend know that you have something you'd like to share and let them choose when to talk. The right moment may present itself naturally, but you can ask for the opportunity to talk. The sooner the better, when it comes to releasing suffering. Finally, let it all out. You don't need to expect a solution from your friend, but trust that they want to know what’s bothering you. Telling someone you trust what's really going on with you is a first step towards healing. It also strengthens the authentic connection you have. If you would prefer to speak with a professional, remember you always have six cost-free, confidential visits a year through the Employee Assistance Program. Take the time to talk about it, and take time to take care. (MUSIC PLAYS)
