CHILDREN’S HEALTH CARE COVERAGE: OTHER COVERAGE Your child may qualify for Health Care Coverage from options that fall under the category "other coverage." One option is coverage through Indian Health Services or IHS. IHS requires proof of Indian descent in order to access their services. A child can be of Indian descent even if he or she does not have the sufficient blood quantum to be a tribal member. Indian descent is established by providing a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood or CDIB card that belongs to the child's parent. The child's name does not have to appear on this card. Indian descent can also be established with a Tribal ID card issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) or a letter issued by the tribe confirming eligibility. If the child's name does not appear on one of these documents we've mentioned, then the child's birth certificate, showing their relationship to the person who is listed on the CDIB card must be included to establish Indian descent. For information on eligibility, services, and locations, you can visit www.ihs.gov/oklahoma or check with your tribal government for information about tribal clinics. Another form of coverage your child may qualify for is Military Health Care through DEERS or TRICARE. This coverage is for active military members who have dependent benefits available for their children and step-children which includes health care coverage. The key to this coverage is to enroll the child. Enrollment needs to be completed by the military member or the custodian of the child. For more information on military health care coverage, visit www.tricare.mil. Here's another option that may provide health care coverage for your child: There are times when a step-parent will have health insurance coverage available for a child when a parent does not. While the child support order will not require a step-parent to provide health insurance coverage, a step-parent can voluntarily enroll the child to satisfy the parent's obligation. Whichever form of health care coverage is right for your family, make sure to bring all coverage information including Indian Descent and Military Certifications and Identifications to any court hearing about child support.
